Chocolate can make all sorts of foods taste good but there is one type of chocolate food pairing that many have yet to try – chocolate with potato chips. It may seem like an unlikely pairing at first, and admittedly, it is pretty unique. But that’s what makes this unusual combination so worth trying. Those who are skeptical are often won over by its sweet and salty goodness.

Making chocolate-covered potato chips at home is pretty easy since the ingredients are readily available. However, it does require a bit of patience.

Choose Ruffled Chips

While you can choose any kind of chips for this recipe, we recommend plain potato chips that have ruffles (ridges). Ridged chips are sturdier than those without ridges, and this raised texture can help keep more of the chocolate on the surface of the chip. As for the brand of chips, use whatever brand is your favorite.

Baking Chocolate Is Best

The candy bars you may have on hand are not suitable for this snack-making project. To make chips covered in chocolate, the chocolate has to be of even consistency without losing any flavor. Baking chocolate is made for such uses and is the best choice for creating the kind of flavor that makes this snack so delectable. Grab a bag or two of your favorite brand of chocolate chips, and you’re ready to move on to the recipe step.

Easy Chocolate-Dipped Potato Chips

For this recipe, you are going to need two baking sheets, parchment paper, two forks, a small saucepan and a medium size bowl that is heatproof. There is no need to turn on the oven because baking isn’t required.

Ingredients

3 cups of chocolate chips (milk chocolate, semi-sweet or dark chocolate)

2 tablespoons vegetable shortening

1 4.5 oz. bag of ridged potato chips

Water

Directions

Line both baking sheets with the parchment paper and set them aside.

Fill the saucepan with water and heat until the water is barely simmering. Place the bowl on top of the pan. Pour the chocolate chips into the bowl. Add the shortening. Stir the mixture occasionally until it is completely melted and has a smooth consistency.

Add a few potato chips to the melted chocolate and coat one side. Using two forks, turn each potato chip over and coat the other side. One by one, remove the chips from the bowl, letting any excess chocolate drip into the bowl, and place the chips onto the prepared baking pans. Repeat these steps with the remaining chips until all the chocolate or chips are gone.

Let chips set at room temperature for about two hours or until the chocolate is firm. This recipe can be adjusted to make a larger batch.
