A Brief History of Pizza and Wings
At the Chocolate Pizza Company, we didn’t invent the idea of combining pizza with wings. It’s an idea that’s been around for quite a while. We did, however, add our own unique spin to this staple of the American diet. By turning a savory dish into a sweet and salty-sweet dessert, you can enjoy pizza and wings for every course of your meal.
“Wings” or “chicken wings,” as we know them today, started in Buffalo, New York, in 1964 at the Anchor Bar owned by Teressa and Frank Bellissimo. Most people considered the “wing” portion of the chicken worthless at the time and often discarded it or dropped it into a pot to make chicken stock.
According to the Smithsonian, the generally accepted narrative was that the wings were delivered to the bar one day by mistake. Rather than use the wings in their spaghetti sauce, Teressa and Frank created a bar appetizer by splitting them into “drumsticks” and “flats” and coating them in a homemade hot sauce of cayenne and butter. The bar snack became an instant hit, and customers began ordering pizza with a side of wings – the “Pizza & Wings Combo” was born.
